John-David Bowman Named 2021 Lowell Milken Center Fellow
June 8, 2021
FORT SCOTT, KS — The Lowell Milken Center (LMC) for Unsung Heroes in Fort Scott, Kansas, an international educational non-profit, has awarded its prestigious Fellowship to high school history teacher John-David Bowman, of Deer Valley High School in Glendale, Arizona. John-David Bowman will arrive in Fort Scott on June 27th for a week of collaboration with LMC staff.
The LMC Fellowship is awarded on the basis of merit to educators who have distinguished themselves in teaching respect and understanding through project-based learning or who have the potential for this distinction. The Center selects exemplary teachers from across America and around the world, drawn from a variety of disciplines, to collaborate on projects that discover, develop, and communicate the stories of Unsung Heroes in history.
John-David Bowman has taught for 14 years at the high school level and also spent 3 years teaching at Arizona State University. While he has taught 10 different courses, his favorite courses include IB Political Theory, IB Theory of Knowledge and AP US History. Mr. Bowman's educational background is rooted in his great state. He has a BA in History and a BA in Political Science from ASU, and a MA in Secondary Education with an emphasis in History from NAU.
John-David believes that there are tremendous things going on in Arizona schools. He feels there is a need to celebrate those accomplishments, while continually striving to find ways to improve whenever possible. John-David focuses on student relationships as the foundation of his teaching philosophy. Mr. Bowman was Arizona's 2015 Teacher of the Year and the 2017 Arizona History Teacher of the Year.
LMC Executive Director Norm Conard says, "John-David is a most accomplished teacher and one of the education leaders in the state of Arizona. He fits perfectly on our team of Fellows as an educator who works to make positive changes in education."
While in Fort Scott, LMC Fellows gain knowledge, educational resources and ongoing support to enhance their classrooms and help students cultivate a passion for learning by creating projects that initiate positive change. Fellows emerge prepared to develop Unsung Heroes projects with their students, as they apply and evaluate the stories of role models who have changed the world throughout history.
