Mayflower High School social studies teacher and alumnus Andrew Harrison received a Milken Educator Award on October 4, 2023.
Harrison is a cheerful presence in the classroom, football field, track, and even the bowling alley. He uses a coaching approach when teaching, emphasizing a teamwork-driven culture while maintaining healthy competition in the classroom. When implementing new strategies, he videotapes lessons and sends them to administrators for constructive feedback. Harrison’s involvement in Mayflower’s instructional leadership team, implemented through a partnership with the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching, includes analyzing student data, developing standards-based success criteria, and leading professional development. Harrison leads a PLC for physical education, health, social studies teachers and athletic coaches and directed a virtual statewide social studies educator collaboration for NIET’s Arkansas Rural Educator Network in 2023. As a coach, Harrison organizes volunteer events and sponsors the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Harrison earned a bachelor’s in professional studies from Arkansas Tech University in 2015 and a master’s in educational leadership and administration from Arkansas State University in 2020.
