In Overland Park, 11th grade social studies teacher Alex Lahasky ignites a passion for the past at his alma mater, Blue Valley West High School. He received a Milken Educator Award on February 8, 2024.
Following the Socratic method, he uses open-ended questions to stimulate conversation and higher-order inquiry. Cases in point: bringing history to life during a Cold War unit spy simulation and creating “APUSH Mixtapes” of his renditions of pop and rap songs that illustrate historical events and their meanings. For a summative assessment, his students deliver a compelling, evidence-based oral presentation on a contemporary political issue of their choosing. Lahasky serves as the social studies department chair, a member of the Advisory Leadership Team, and has mentored new teachers. As the assistant baseball coach, Lahasky leverages his experience as a high school and college athlete to mentor student athletes.
Lahasky earned his Bachelor of Science in social science and secondary education in 2014 from William Carey University and a Master of Arts in history in 2016 from Pittsburg State University.
