Teacher, Amistad High School | Indio, CA
Amistad High School English and senior studies teacher Alexis Arias received a Milken Educator Award on November 16, 2023.
Arias understands the meaning of second chances. In 2017 she survived one of the deadliest mass shootings in the U.S. while attending a concert in Las Vegas. For many of her students, the alternative education program at Amistad High School represents a second chance to earn a high school diploma. Her experience growing up in Indio and remarkable survival story help her connect with students who have struggled in traditional school settings. Arias prepares students to be “life ready,” employing small group instruction and monitoring academic progress in real-time. With her help, Amistad achieved a 91% graduation rate, 93% FAFSA application rate, steady employment or military service applications, and a continual increase in students pursuing post-secondary education. Arias serves as a club coordinator, volleyball coach and district curriculum writer, and shares her expertise at statewide conferences on alternative education.
Arias earned a bachelor’s in English literature from California State University, San Bernardino, Palm Desert Campus, in 2007; and a master’s in reading and writing instruction from California State University, San Bernardino, in 2015.
