Leslie McIntosh (NE '23)
Teacher, Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca Middle School | Syracuse, NE
Leslie McIntosh is a fifth grade reading and English language arts teacher at Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca Middle School. She received a Milken Educator Award on November 21, 2023.
With deep roots in the community, she grew up on a farm outside of Syracuse and graduated from Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca High School. Her mother, a seasoned educator, set the stage for her daughter. McIntosh developed a comprehensive improvement plan to address areas of need in fifth grade ELA. This strategy resulted in over 90% of her students exhibiting proficiency and significant academic growth across the grade. McIntosh participates in her teacher professional learning community, where positive feedback has led to increased attendance and engagement. She volunteers at her church and community events, and helped coordinate the “Summer Blast” program with a science lab, coding, sewing, furniture making, and fine arts. Last year, more than $10,000 in proceeds went to the school.
McIntosh received a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in 2011 and two Master of Education degrees from Doane University: curriculum and instruction in 2018 and educational leadership in 2022.
