Mentor Teacher, Johnston-Hopkins Elementary School | New Iberia, LA
Christine Bayard received a Milken Educator Award on at Johnston-Hopkins Elementary School in New Iberia on February 6, 2024.
Her sixth grade students explore math concepts beyond their textbooks. Students complete space-related calculations, like how much food, water and oxygen is needed to live on Mars for two years. When Bayard’s classroom transforms into a construction site, students build habitats with cubes after calculating the cost, revenue and profit or loss. Students explore fractions, speed and velocity by virtually building racecars. Bayard serves as a mentor teacher, helping lead collaborative professional development meetings, teacher observations and coaching efforts through a partnership with the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching. She is a certified Louisiana mentor teacher. Bayard established JHOP’s gold level national math club, co-sponsors the Jr. Beta Club, co-founded the reading mentor program, and assists in planning “Fun Day.”
Bayard earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology with a minor in child and family studies in 2009 and completed the alternative teacher education program in 2017 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
