Leah Lawrence (MO '23)

English language arts teacher Leah Lawrence received a Milken Educator Award on November 17, 2023, at Hardin Middle School in St. Charles.
Her seventh grade students use Play-Doh to navigate the writing process, tangibly learning how to welcome criticism, provide feedback, and think critically about improving their next “draft.” Lawrence empowers students to set goals and track their progress. She ignites healthy competition among students through engaging classroom games; one of which encourages them to race to the front of the classroom, using fly swatters to “SWAT” away errors in sentences written on the whiteboard. As the ELA department chair, she helps lead team meetings and works with the seventh grade PLC team. Lawrence is also a member of HMS’ climate committee, the district professional development committee, and mentors new teachers. Students enjoy her presence at HMS sports games, events, and a back-to-school bootcamp which she designed and launched.
Lawrence graduated Lindenwood University with a Bachelor of Arts in English education in 2007, a Master of Arts in education in 2012, and an education specialist degree in school administration in 2016.
