Ashley Wilkins (WV '23)

At Petersburg High School, English language arts teacher Ashley Wilkins’ eighth grade students engage in respectful, high-level discussions during Socratic Seminars and journey through character trials using Edgar Allan Poe’s "The Tell-Tale Heart." She received a Milken Educator Award on October 31, 2023.
Wilkins’ presence inside and outside of the classroom contributes to a positive school culture. Serving on the Local School Improvement Council and as the junior class sponsor, she coordinates homecoming, prom and other fundraising initiatives. Additionally, Wilkins provides professional development for educators through her annual technology summit, organizes team meetings, supports new staff members, and collaborates with teachers and parents to implement student interventions in her roles as an eighth grade team leader and student assistance team coordinator.
Wilkins earned a Bachelor of Arts in secondary English education and a minor in Appalachian studies in 2017 from Shepherd University, a Master of Science in curriculum and instruction from Western Governors University in 2019, and in 2023, a graduate certificate of completion in English from Grand Canyon University and a graduate certificate in instructional leadership from West Virginia State University.
