Asia Cunningham (NC '23)
Principal, Pearsontown Elementary | Durham, NC
At Pearsontown Elementary in Durham, Principal Asia Cunningham focuses on data-based strategies, collaborating with the leadership team to monitor, analyze and develop instructional plans for each student. She received a Milken Educator Award on November 3, 2023.
Her positive approach includes hosting teacher groups and establishing a school community support system for new families. Under her leadership, Pearsontown has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School, a National PTA School of Excellence, and a Magnet School of America. Cunningham creates opportunities for family engagement, including community discussions and “We are Kings and We are Queens,” a program that empowers young girls and boys to become agents of change. She encourages future leaders as a North Carolina Principal Fellow and collaborator with the Central Carolina Regional Education Service Alliance. Cunningham serves on university panels, regularly speaks at leadership conferences, and has helped develop district curriculum.
Cunningham received a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice in 2007 from North Carolina Central University, a Master of Arts in teaching from Walden University in 2015, and a Master of School Administration from NCCU in 2017.
