Mentor Teacher, Horizon Honors Elementary School | Phoenix, AZ
At Horizon Honors Elementary School in Phoenix, first and second grade students explore the ins and outs of learning and life from mentor teacher Ashley Meyer. She received a Milken Educator Award on December 7, 2023.
Meyer’s interactive lessons help first and second grade students master the material and its relevance to everyday life – leading to high levels of performance and sustained student achievement. As part of Horizon’s partnership with the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching, Meyer plays an integral role on the school’s instructional leadership team, where she lends knowledge to schoolwide professional development, curriculum development and coaching. Her classroom is open for observations and feedback from colleagues, and she is a trusted source on a range of topics, from classroom management to parent communication. An advocate for student accessibility and success, Meyer works with parents on setting student goals and creating tailored plans to meet them. Having completed state dyslexia training, she monitors her classroom for alternative learning opportunities and behavioral accommodations. Meyer sponsors a “Spirit Squad” club after school for first through fourth grade students.
Meyer earned a bachelor’s in elementary education from Illinois State University in 2016 and a master’s in reading and literacy from Grand Canyon University in 2019.
