Derrick Winn (LA '23)

At Baton Rouge’s Crestworth Elementary School, Derrick Winn received a Milken Educator Award on February 6, 2024.
Winn teaches third grade math and science in a looped classroom. Through a partnership with the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching, Winn joins a collaborative faculty centered on teacher leadership and support. Winn’s students play Kahoot! games, create songs to remember math facts, and participate in Winn’s Math Fact Challenge and March Madness Math-A-Thon, or “March Mathness.” He created the Math Multiplication Challenge for upper grades. Winn participates in reading interventions, organizes staff luncheons and mentors teachers. He is a member of Crestworth committees on student government; art; and Black History and co-sponsors the Boy Scout Club. Winn wrote a play, musical, and book addressing bullying prevention and student empowerment.
Winn earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Louisiana State University and A&M College in 2010 and completed the alternative certification program at Southern University and A&M College in 2015. He received a Master of Science in K-12 studies and education with an emphasis in standards-based math from Capella University in 2017.
