Magali Gomez (NM '23)
Teacher, Ruben S. Torres Elementary School | Deming, NM
At Ruben S. Torres Elementary School in Deming, Magali Gomez has established herself as a steadfast teacher leader and inspiring mentor who works to support her colleagues and achieve growth for students. She received a Milken Educator Award on December 12, 2023.
Gomez embraces innovative methodologies like empowering students to use data-trackers to chart their growth, teaching communications skills through a hands-on journalism project, and weaving PBL throughout her curriculum. Gomez looks for ways to inspire students’ future careers, inviting local newspaper journalists to the school for a Black History Month project with an outdoor art installation and hosting the Public Service Company of New Mexico for her electricity lesson. A former therapist, she brings social emotional learning techniques into her classroom and embodies a spirit of service in the greater community as a court-appointed advocate for foster children and an adjunct social work professor at Western New Mexico University.
Gomez completed a Bachelor of Social Work (2012), Master of Social Work (2017) and Master in the Art of Teaching (2021) from Western New Mexico University in 2012.
